End days of Archibald Portrait Prize 2018 exhibition and the better is on the Young Archie section
Winner Young Archie 2018 - "Claire" by Jessica Thompson - category 13-15 year olds |
Until this September 9, The Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney Australia will continue showing the 57 finalists of the Archibald Portrait Prize 2018. With some exceptions the whole group of paintings in the exhibition are full of an absence of personality. Even the winner. But, there is good news, the most interesting temperament depictions are in the Young Archie section, which is dedicated to impulse artists under formation from 5 to 18 years old, so is necessary to write about it.
In painting, the force of the portraiture practice is based on the power to implicate on canvas a psychological characterization of people, when we say the group of pictures has a lack of personality, we are saying the painter failed in the job. Colors, forms, lighting, everything counts to get that goal. In that way, some of the Young Archie artists have done a very complete aesthetic proposal. And some of them are intrinsically including this essential goal in their artworks.
Charlotte Coady, winner in the 16-18 years old category would declare about her portrait: “My father, my sole parent, is the most wonderful and kind man I have ever known and will ever know. But sometimes I see such sadness in his eyes, with worries that seem to melt in his thoughts. I have attempted to capture these feelings through my unpretentious portrait of him.”. Michelle Boulais, honorable mention at 13-15 years old category: “This portrait is a depiction of my mum; she was the one who first helped me pursue art. She is my inspiration and support. Within this portrait, I have tried to capture her personality completely through the interplay of both light and shadow.” Violet Watts, finalist 13-15 years old: “This is Arani, my first and best friend… Her fascination for animals and the natural world meant we were never bored. I chose to draw Arani because to me she will always be the one I look up to in hope of knowledge… This image symbolises her shy, private personality and how immersed she is within the world we are lucky enough to grow up in.”. Jessica Thompson, winner 13-15 years old category: “This is a painting of my mum Clare. Sitting on the beach, windswept and hassled by the stormy day, yet always bringing light to situations with humour and love. Love for me, support for me. She is my motivation and, more importantly, my inspiration to strive to put my all into everything I do. Her eyes say it all, this picture embodies the essence of my mum in her most raw state. Calm blues against the raging grey sky, she is stunning.”
Between winners, finalist and honorable mentions, almost 50 portraits from the Young Archie competition are on exhibition. Art Gallery NSW, on its website has declared this year the award received more than 1,400 entries: 34% in the 5-8 year category, 38% in 9-12 year, 20% in 13-15 year and 8% in 16-18 year. And 72% of the total were from girls.
