All is about mountains crowned on winter landscapes, when the snow falls covering the fields, the awareness of a new sense of life occurring around us is overwhelming. The trees and rocks, the only survivors of the climate phenomenon, appear as real deities of the beautiful white scene. With the calm and tessitura of winter, Canadian artist Karine Léger presents her new abstract paintings at Lanoue Art Gallery, Boston.
The aesthetic work of Léger moves on the harmony of the endless beauty of a cold colour palette. Forgetting complexity, the artist is concentrated in the translation of trapezoidal shapes all over the canvas, same shapes that are filled with textures similar to transversal cut rocks or wooden logs, marks that transmit dynamism and organic life to the paintings. Although sometimes the pictures created by Leger could be seen as portraits of prehistoric hunting artefacts, the compositions evolve nicely between the forces of polar storms and quiet starry nights.
The paintings seem to be cyclical; they could be interpreted by the spectator as clues that describe the path of a story: the wisdom of the night being born at twilight and coexisting with the ascent of reflexive days. At “Unravel I” for example, the shapes break the complicity, forest and blue tempered skies go forward and deep darkness is left behind, a blow of white lines traces the action. “Night Swim” series is a game of astral bodies, in the firmament, the stones flirt with their movements and the obsidian souls are hidden by a stacking of marble angels.
Nothing more than the toughness of rocks beautiful nature calmed with the melodic use of the space by the painter. Recent works of Montreal born Karine Léger are being exhibited at
Lanoue Gallery until April 14, 2018. Around 15 artworks will be trying to bright with their own light.
